Apple is hard at work making the next version of the iPhone worth every penny of its subsidized $499 price tag. The next iPhone probably due out at Macworld or early spring of ‘08 will incorporate a GPS receiver chip closely matching the SiRFstarIII from SiRF Technology. Even though the StarIII’s power consumption is a bit higher than Apple would like it is considered the best chip for a mobile device of this kind, having the capability to receive signals from 20 different satellites simultaneously and a super fast First Fix Time.
Because of the high expectations placed upon the iPhone, Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover.
The first phone/GPS devise to fully utilize this technology is CNS-4320 from DiXCOM. The CNS-4320 hybrid device uses GSM radio with GPRS data for text and multimedia messaging. DiXCOM has also equipped the CNS with the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for real time traffic information, a technology Apple is thought to be developing.

I’ve been trolling the internet looking for another iphone application that lets you access your entire iTunes library from your iPhone, but there’s nothing.

DOT.TUNES is the ONLY application that gives you the ability to stream music (iphone ringtones ), videos (iphone videos) and movies directly from your iPhone.
The whole team has been rocking DOT.TUNES on their iPhones and we’re spreading the word.
I’m not trying to brag, but DOT.TUNES is the truth. Its the sexiest application out for the iPhone right now, and I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.
But don’t take my word for it, download the application, get the iPhone plug-in and try it out for yourself.

Funstastic v3.03 is here and the good news for those who have PowerPCs is that the latest version of the iPhone unlocking now supports PowerPC. The other great enhancement is that the file browser will not only let you gain access to iPhone’s file system it will also allows you to install the latest native iPhone application. Read on for more details.
bitSplit, after about 3 weeks of silence has just released v3.03 of iFuntastic and if v2.5 was great with the addition of the iPhone file browser, the latest version is even better.
One of the most important new features in v3 is “Unshackling”. No longer will you have to un-jail and re-jail your iPhone for every modifiaction. Once you unshackle, you’re free to make any modifications you please while simultaneously maintaining iTunes’ ability to access the phone. Very sweet.
The Home Screen section has been significantly updated. Just as you could in previous versions, iFuntastic allows you to rearrange the icons on your home screen, but it gets even cooler. You can now have multiple home screens with a different set of icons on each. Take that, Spaces. On top of that, you know have the ability to put iphone backgrounds on each home screen as well as rotate them. Can you say “useful”?
Ringtones has also been updated. Remember that handy tip on getting free iphone ringtones from iTunes? Now you can use iFuntastic to rip iTunes previews for you. Simply create a playlist of songs from the iTunes Music Storeand drag the exported version into iFuntastic. The songs are downloaded from the store and uploaded right into your iPhone.
The new File Manager is awfully cool. It can be used to install new iphone software, save and delete files, and everything in between. iFuntastic also allows you to fiddle with system images and change the carrier logo, as you could in the past.
According to bitSplit, (summarized) changes since the last version are:
* PowerPC support! Finally. Thanks for keeping the faith ![]()
* One-time unjailing - called ‘Unshackling’.
* Drag and drop any file onto the phone in the new ‘File Manager’ (formerly Browser ![]()
* Edit text directly on the phone.
* Drag and drop installation of native applications - no restart of the phone necessary.
* Info page: a one-stop-shop for all documentation (still sparsely populated right now, sorry.)
* Troubleshooting page: a one-stop-shop for pummeling the phone and inquiring about its status.
* Much improved ringtone installation.
* Drag and drop replacement of system sounds.
* Completely reworked Home Screen Editor. Place applications anywhere you want them (gaps are OK.)
* Support for multiple home screen ‘pages’. Have up to 80 applications at your fingertips!
* Custom home screen ‘wallpaper’, better called home screen backgrounds, to distinguish from the ‘real’ wallpaper.

You can’t actually buy their iphone unlock software yet, but if - like, I confess, me - you enjoy reading the instructions and literature even for gadgets you don’t own then you’ll be wanting to take a browse through iphonesimfree.com’s FAQ. It contains all manner of juicy tidbits, but of course the one iPhone owners are most interested in is lucky number 13:
13. When can I get it?
We are hoping to release in the next 48-72 hours
More details after the cut…
According to the FAQ, the unlock can be performed either before or after activation with AT&T, and has been tested with software versions up to the current 1.0.2 build. There’s no guarantee, of course, that future updates won’t re-lock or generally upset your iPhone. All features, with the exception of Visual Voicemail, are working, and even if you’re forced to restore your iPhone the unlock will still be in place.
Initially you’ll have to Jailbreak your iPhone, but they’re apparently working on a fully automated app for both PC and Mac that will be a one-click pathway to unlock loveliness. Expect it shortly after launch.

Good news everybody! Have you wanted to try out all those great-sounding third-party iPhone applications? Did the hacking part of it put you off? NullRiver has released a simple iPhone GUI installer for Mac OS X.
Download the latest version of AppTapp installer to your Mac and then dock your iPhone, quit iTunes, and launch the program. The software downloads a copy of the latest Apple Firmware; you choose whether you’re using Firmware 1.0.0, 1.0.1 or 1.0.2. It takes a few minutes to download the files from Apple using a good connection and then the software copies some files to your iPhone. When finished, your iPhone restarts and the Installer app appears on your iPhone home screen. The Installer application gives you access to nearly every third party application that has thus far been released by iPhone developers. I tested the entire install procedure on my G4 Mac and it worked flawlessly.
Oh, and if you’re looking to try out those software packages I posted about earlier today, open Installer App, and install “Community Sources”.
AppTapp is a Universal Binary, in Beta, and free.
Update: Readers ask: “Will this mess up my firmware updates?” Answer: Possibly–I’ll try to get a firmer answer out of the developers. Use at your own risk, of course.
From TUAW.

Now that the AT&T legal monkeys have set their sights on software unlocking methods, you may be thinking the hardware unlock for iphone is a more tempting one. If that’s the case, then this Flickr gallery documenting the stages of the process might make your own attempt more straightforward; after all, there’s no such thing as too much preparation when the potential outcome is a bricked iPhone!
I still think you’d need to be a very, very brave person to try it yourself, but there are undoubtedly people who’ll give it a go. As ever, should you do it - successfully or not! - do let us know in the comments.

Big news today on the iPhone software development front. This morning brings the release of both a native instant messaging client and a native IRC client.
Apollo IM just entered Version Negative 1, an early beta release. It is available as well via Installer.app. Apollo IM has been developed by “Arminius” and offers iPhone-native instant messaging capabilities. Future releases will support file transfer as well as MSN/Yahoo/Jabber/Gtalk support.
“Pogi”’s iRCm provides a GUI-based Internet Relay Chat client for your iPhone. You can join channels, issue raw IRC commands and take part in conversations. iRCm is available for download at Google Code, and packages have been loaded for both Installer.app and PXL.
Both applications have been developed with Shimmer/PXL, the iPhone auto-updates library. Shimmer allows iPhone code to “call home” and update themselves when new versions become available. Both developers are looking for feedback and plan to use this update feature to allow the program to keep growing via its installed base.
If you’re interested in developing for either application, pop over to Google Code and download the latest SVN. Both projects offer a great opportunity to get involved in open source.

If you need some strategic ways to reduce battery usage and conserve energy with your tech toys, your new iPhone offers plenty of options to make the most of its daily life. The iPhone is a power-guzzler, there’s no doubt about it. You need a considerable amount of energy and battery power to keep that web browser humming along at full speed, and you’ll notice the battery shrinking in power after just a few hours. There are a few iPhone battery replacements available, but you can take steps to reduce your output with just a few tweaks.
Make sure you’re turning the Wi-Fi radio off when you’re not online. This turns on automatically every time your wireless device is enabled, and can take away lots of energy from standard PDA applications. You’ll notice things run much faster as soon as you make the switch. Turn off the Bluetooth radio while you’re at it; just go to the ‘Settings’ tab and switch it off when you’re not roaming.
Second, turn off the equalizer. You’re probably already doing this on your iPod, and it can help lower the need for extra energy when you’re not listening to your bass-blaster music. In most cases, you don’t need this set at all when you’re browsing on the web either; unless you’re watching a lot of videos, the equalizer can be turned off in most cases.
Even though Apple has developed a battery that outlasts many competitor PDA gadgets, you can still extend battery life by running it out completely before recharging it fully. It’s a classic maneuver for standard cell phones, and works well for the iPhone too.
Checking e-mail takes a lot of energy to load up and refresh. Checking e-mail constantly can be a difficult habit to break, especially if you’re used to using a laptop on the road. Start getting into a routine of an hourly check, and you’ll save a considerable amount of battery power in the process.
The backlight display is bright enough to serve as a flashlight, and is one of the iPhone’s most attractive features. Still, that sharp picture is taking the juice out of the system. You can lower the brightness setting and save some battery power by selecting the ‘Settings’ tab and reducing the light output level; 15-20% will still give you plenty of screen visibility.
You can manually control the ‘Auto-Lock’ feature of the iPhone to program so that your iPhone goes to sleep after a short period of inactivity. You’ll be using up much less power throughout the day, and it will be easier to load it up whenever you do need it.
Extend the battery life of your iPhone with these easy tips; you’ll enjoy more flexibility for usage throughout the day, and be energy-conscious in the process.

It’s high noon, Apple and AT&T — we really hate to break it to you, but the jig is up. Last night the impossible was made possible: right in front of our very eyes we witnessed a full SIM unlock of our iPhone with a small piece of software. It’s all over, guys.

The iPhoneSIMfree.com team called us up to prove their claim that iphone unlock was completed.SIM lock system, and prove it they did. (No, we don’t have a copy of the unlock software, so don’t even ask us, ok?) The six-man team has been working non-stop since launch day, and they’re officially the first to break Apple’s SIM locks on the iPhone with software. It’s done. Seriously. They wouldn’t tell us when and how they would release it to the public, but you can certainly bet that they’ll try to make a buck on their solution (and rightly so). We can hardly believe the iPhone’s finally been cracked. No, scratch that — we just can’t believe it took this long.
Again: we can confirm with 100% certainty that iPhoneSIMfree.com’s software solution completely SIM unlocks the iPhone, is restore-resistant, and should make the iPhone fully functional for users outside of the US.
Notes on the install

Before you get in a tizzy claiming it’s a faked video, please note that:
Thanks Engadget.
