Endgadget posts a video demo of an iPhone successfully making a phone call over IP. The demo was provided by a company called Truphone who announced today. From the press release:
1. Many people have called for true VoIP calling on Apple’s iPhone. Truphone will today prove that it is possible using the iPhone’s in-built Wi-Fi capability.
2. Truphone’s demonstration will comprise two iPhones connected to Wi-Fi on the DEMOfall 07 stage. A VoIP call will be initiated from one handset, routed via Wi-Fi and the Internet to Truphone’s servers, and then back again to the access point and onwards to the destination handset — a 100% IP phone call.
3. Today’s event will be a live demonstration only and is not a commercial launch of Truphone on the iPhone.
4. Truphone does not need to unlock the SIM in order to operate its service for the iPhone.
Voice over IP (VOIP) allows users to use the internet to transmit their voice calles, bypassing AT&T’s cellular network (and billing).

When I saw that Mark/Space was planning to release a version of Missing Sync for iPhone my first reaction was: what for? But as it happens I think they’ve hit upon some needed features that are actually missing from the out-of-the-box iPhone experience. First is a Migration Assistant for moving contacts, calendar entries, and photos from a Palm, Windows Mobile, or Blackberry device onto your Mac and thence to the iPhone. It also syncs your SMS messages and call log to your Mac so you don’t lose information when you hit the storage limits on the iPhone. Best of all, perhaps, is Notes syncing, which will allow you to view iPhone notes in Yojimbo, Entourage, or Mark/Space’s Notebook application. Unfortunately, however, it appears that it’s only one-way, from the iPhone to the Mac, and not vice versa. This lack two-way Notes syncing remains a puzzling lacuna as far as I’m concerned, and I’m looking forward to somebody, whether it be Apple or Mark/Space, filling this obvious hole in the iPhone feature set.
Missing Sync for iPhone won’t be available until the 4th quarter and will sell for Mark/Space’s normal price of $39.95, but crossgrades will be offered from other Missing Sync products. This is quite a useful software for iphone.

The Associated Press managed to talk to Phil Schiller, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, about Apple’s recent announcement that hacked or unlocked iPhones might become expensive paperweights after an upcoming software update is applied to them. (The AP also quoted our very own Erica Sadun on the topic.)
Phil says that this isn’t about punishing people for unlocking their iPhones, but rather that the various iPhone unlocking apps have ‘caused damage to the iPhone software and that Apple can’t be help responsible for what happens to a hacked iPhone.
I’m willing to believe that Apple isn’t maliciously trying to brick iPhones that have been unlocked. It is far more probable that the update might, under certain circumstances, break your hacked iPhone and Apple doesn’t want to spend the time fixing the update to play nice, and they don’t want to have to pay for all the broken iPhones that may result.

One iPhone feature for which we’ve received a number of requests is the ability to listen to audio from music or videos through Bluetooth headsets — especially stereo headsets like iSkin’s Ceruleans F1 pair. Unfortunately, the iPhone doesn’t (yet) have such capability built-in. iPhone Atlas reader Ken Fischer, however, made an interesting discovery: engaging the iPod function to listen to music/video audio while a call is taking place will allow you to hear said audio. Obviously this is not an ideal solution, but it proves that the iPhone at least harbors the capability to send music/video audio through Bluetooth headsets, and opens the door for software workarounds to trigger the throughput without the need for an active call.
Ken writes:
“I’ve always wanted to use a bluetooth headset with the iPhone for listening to music or video but it ’supposedly’ doesn’t work. Well, it does … but only during an active phone call. First make a call and use your bluetooth headset, then while on the call, open up a song or a video and you will hear it through the headset. When the call ends, so does that ability. Perhaps someone can capitalize on this to make it work without the call.”
UPDATE: It appears that you can also engage this functionality by going to the voicemail screen and clicking on the audio source button in the top right-hand corner, then selecting the bluetooth device and subsequently selecting the iPod function and playing audio. This method does not require an active phone call.

Apple has your unlocked iPhone in their crosshairs. What do you do? This method in no way guarantees that your iPhone will survive the update after being unlocked. If you’re risk adverse, you may want to wait a day or two for these instructions to get debugged. And be aware there may be a lock/unlock limit set by hardware.
The IMEI errors seems to be unrelated to unlock method–I’m hearing from people who used pretty much each of the unlock scenarios. Some people have simply re-unlocked and are using their phones without problem but can’t re-lock, reversing the unlock.
Important note: depending on the method of unlocking, some people are experiencing munged IMEI’s. Looking into this! “Delayed Green” says that he saw this “Incorrect SIM” error in the early unlock days and that he knows of no way to fix the problem. Things to try: a different SIM, removing the SIM, powering down and back on, making sure the radio is working.
I’m hearing about both success reports and problems. If you haven’t tried relocking yet, do yourself a favor and just wait until we figure out why some relocks are going wrong. Here’s yet another link to check out.Following are steps to relock iphone.
Thanks to Shaun T. Erickson and Kai Cherry
“What about restore?” — Unlocks survive restore. It’s a different part of your phone.
“Will this affect Jailbreak or 3rd party apps?” — No but you still may have to restore before the next firmware update.
“Will the next firmware update lock me out from jailbreak and 3rd party apps?” — We have to see but…likely yes.
“Do I have to update my iPhone when the next firmware is released?” — No. But then you’re kind of sticking your iPhone into a time warp. Everything else will change but not your iPhone. And I don’t see there being a parallel development effort on the part of hackers.

Hey guys - this is a bit of a detour form what we usually cover on the blog - but I just wanted to share this little trick I thought of for the iPhone.
However, in case you are looking for a free option then there is some good news as folks at Embraceware Software have published the below procedure which should help you stream music from the iTunes library on your Mac to the iPhone for free.
Step 1
Open “Sharing” in System Preferences and enable “Personal Web Sharing” - this will turn on the built in web server installed with OS X. When enabled, it will display an address (your IP or computer network name) as the URL for accessing the site on your network. Note this address - we’ll be visiting it on our iPhone via Safari later.
Step 2
The root of the web site is located in /Library/WebServer/Documents.
Open the Terminal and type the following:
cd /Library/WebServer/Documents/
and press ENTER.
Step 3
Still in the Terminal we will continue by creating a Symbolic link to your iTunes “Movies” directory and place this link in the root of your web server by typing the following:
ln -s /[path ti your iTunes Movies folder] Movies
example: ln -s/Volumes/Machintosh HD/users/john/Music/iTunes/Movies Movies
Step 4
Open Safari on your iPhone and visit the address provided when you enabled the Personal Web Sharing in your iPhone followed by /Movies
Example: http://192.168.2.20/Movies/
You will be presented with a text directory listing of all of your iTunes movies. Simply tap on any movie link and it’ll launch QuickTime on the iPhone and play the movie - just like any other video streamed on the web.
Technically if your home internet connection has a high upload speed you could even stream your content over the internet - outside of your local network - assuming your ISP doesn’t block port 80.
Just thought I’d share that with you - it’s a quick and simple thing you can do with no special software required.Enjoy your iphone videos right now!
