If you’re brave enough to program an iPhone application under Windows, Christmas just came early. Over at the iPhoneGameOver wiki page, programmer David Supuran has posted a link to the Windows Cygwin Binary Toolchain as well as full installation instructions and a binary installer.
From here, users can download the files, install them on a jailbroken iPhone and combine this with a free Apple Online Developer account in order to download existing software development kit files. The development environment can also run in the Cygwin Bash shell, so users with some background in Unix can start creating iPhone applications provided they have some experience under their belt.

You’re standing in line when Bill Clinton, former US President, walks by with his Secret Service escort. Quick! What do you do? (1) Shake his hand. (2) Share a quick joke about Arkansas’s night life. (3) Ask him to sign your iPhone.
If you’re B. Ioffe, the answer is 3. He writes that President Clinton shared that he is an iPhone owner; Steve Jobs fixed him up with an iPhone for his personal use. This of course demands the question: If ex-Veep Al Gore is on Apple’s Board of Directors, why didn’t he snag his old buddy an iPhone himself? Or, as Ioffe writes, at least a prerelease 3G version.

Christmas is approaching, and what better way to wile away a minute or two than with a virtual snow globe? The kind folks at Pop Art created this iPhone Snow Globe that one ’shakes’ by changing the orientation of the iPhone.
It’ll amuse you for a moment, and it is free so why not? That’s what the holiday season is all about, right?

By default, the iPhone allows you to trigger the following actions when the home button is clicked: go the Home screen (Springboard); go to phone favorites; go to the iPod function. Wouldn’t it be great, however, if you could double-click the home button and trigger an automatic launch of Safari, the dialing of a specific phone number, or a blank email message? A new native application dubbed “iPhoneHome” makes it possible.
To install the program: launch Installer and install iPhoneHome from the “Utilities” section.
Once the program is installed, launch it and tap the “Change App” button. You can choose the dialing of any phone number, the creation of a blank email, the launching of the camera or any other application installed on your iPhone to be automatically effected when you double-click the home button (with your iPhone on and awake). Click “Save and Quit” and the change will take place.

If you happen to live in a very cold area within the United States, don’t bother using the weather application on your iPhone. The weather application does not display negative Fahrenheit temperatures and just replaces them with 0F. If you’re using Celsius, the application for some reason displays negative temperatures. This was pointed out by a person in Alaska who posted on the Apple discussion boards.
I live in Alaska. The temps here have all been below zero F or more than -18C but the weather reported on the iPhone never goes below zero F. right now it is -13F and going to Yahoo says this but the iPhone shows 0F.
Currently in Nome, Alaska it’s a chilling -18F, yet the iPhone displays 0F. Hopefully Apple fixes this bug in the next update as it’s getting pretty darn cold here.

Apple has posted sample code demonstrating how to handle iPhone or iPod touch orientation events through JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. Whenever an iPhone rotates, it triggers orientation events that you can catch in Mobile Safari. Apple provides a sample iPhoneOrientation.js file that implements a typical handler, window.onorientationchange. CSS attributes can dynamically change how the webpage appears.I loaded a copy of the sample over at my website. If you’d like to give it a try on your iPhone, navigate here.

Intuit, creator of the popular money management software Quicken, has decided to test out a new version of its software by offering it as a service to iPhone users. That demographic tends to be young, educated, affluent, and trendy—the perfect group to test out Quicken’s new software-as-a-service (SaaS) model and hopefully infuse some life into the company’s plateauing sales.
Intuit says that it plans to launch the iPhone version of Quicken on January 8, just days before the Macworld Expo begins, and that it will only cost $3 per month. The product has been redesigned to better appeal to the younger demographic and those who are savvy to online banking, but haven’t used money management software, Intuit senior VP Rick Jensen told Reuters. “Our first mission is to make sure we are solving the needs of people who are not currently using a personal finance solution,” he said.
It has also been redesigned with the iPhone in mind. Although there will also be a general web version available so that anyone with a browser may use it, the iPhone version will have fewer features than Quicken’s web version and will be better optimized to take advantage of the iPhone’s touchscreen. (It’s rare to see fewer features touted as a plus.)
Jensen said that the company decided to target this group because teens and young adults have shown to be willing to pay for software, but not if it forces them to spend time to install it on a desktop, or if it restricts them to their home computers. “It’s about the amount of work and time they are willing to invest,” he said to Reuters. “Even going out and shopping for a piece of software in the store. They are not interested in that.”
Intuit’s SaaS model isn’t a brand new idea—Google has been heavily pushing its own SaaS offerings to both web and mobile users, and even has an iPhone-optimized portal of its own—but it’s still fairly novel for companies that are used to selling licenses for desktop software. If Intuit finds that its $3 per month online version is successful, more companies could shift operations online and offer mobile optimized versions for a small monthly subscription fee. They don’t have to just be for the iPhone, either, but for all manner of desktop and mobile devices. Adobe has already discussed plans to begin offering its key products as a service online—although it may be some time before we see a web version of Photoshop optimized for iPhone, companies seem eager to find out if SaaS is truly where it’s at for the future.
Update: Quicken’s Group Product Manager, Jim Del Favero, contact us to clarify a few points about Quicken’s soon-to-be-released web version and the iPhone version. He said that Quicken Online, the web-based version of the software, will run $2.99 per month, and will contain mobile elements for users of different types of mobile phones. There will also be a special, iPhone-optimized interface for Quicken Online, which comes as part of the overall $2.99 per month package.

Though Apple’s GarageBand now lets you easily create custom ringtones from audio tracks in various formats (see a video demonstration), third-party ringtone creation utility developers aren’t twiddling their thumbs. GarageBand’s Mac OS X exclusivity and $80 (as part of iLife) price tag mean continued viability for the two most popular drag-and-drop tools, which recently received updates:
