Seems like it was only yesterday that the iPhone was first hacked. But now, it looks like the 1.1.3 firmware jailbreak is a reality! Many have gotten emotional about the 1.1.2 jailbreak getting “broken” after the 1.1.3 upgrade; fear not, you may well have a jailbreak for 1.1.3 soon enough! See the video — there you have it, Installer.app working with a 1.1.3 iPhone.
Will this new jailbreak process be released in the immediate future? Who knows, but we can tell you that iPhone Atlas is reporting that the jailbreak requires a hardware modification of some sort — leading me to believe that this hack isn’t for the faint-of-heart. However, it might be worth it to wait until next month, where we should be seeing the official SDK from Apple.

For all those unlocked iPhones out there that were bricked after attempting firmware upgrades, we have some great news. It appears that Apple’s new 1.1.3 iPhone firmware rewrites either most or all of the phone’s firmware, allowing for bricked iPhones to be brought back to life. If this sounds too good to be true, watch the video above. We tested it on our own dead iPhone that was originally unlocked with AnySIM and later bricked by an attempted upgrade. This phone had just been gathering dust in one of Brian Lam’s many gadget drawers, so we were surprised when we finally had success with bringing it back to life. Getting the iPhone working again wasn’t as easy as we expected, and at times it didn’t seem like the firmware upgrade had worked, so here’s what happened.

To upgrade, we put the phone in recovery mode, then connected to iTunes and restored/ upgraded. After the phone had finished upgrading, it would not work with our already valid ATT sim, so we had to activate the phone using iTunes. This is where we ran into some trouble, because after activating the iPhone under our existing account, the phone still did not show any signal and would not activate to our account. We restarted the phone and just like magic, were taken directly to the home screen. The phone now had signal and was clearly activated to our account. We made a few test calls, and tested the data connection, both with complete success.
For all of you out there that will state the video could be fake because it has been edited, let us direct your attention to the plastic-film that is still on the glass of the iPhone. In every shot you will see that the phone still has it’s plastic-film on, confirming we are using the same phone before and after

DoctaBu has come up with a novel way to use Webclips: creating a personal photo album. He realized he could have some fun with webclips by building an entire page of nothing but his friends’ and family’s pictures. He placed these all on a separate SpringBoard screen, which he can flick over to whenever he wants. Have you done something extraordinary or unique with Webclips? Let us know!

It has only been couple of days since Apple released iPhone Firmware v1.1.3 and we are already seeing reports of some improvements which Apple folks did not think were significant enough to inform us.
iPhone Atlas is reporting that the storage limit for SMS has been increased from 1,000 to around 75,000.
Second, you can apparently now use two-finger typing with iPhone’s soft keyboard which essentially means that you don’t need to remove your finger from one letter in order to type another letter. So now you can use the hold the shift key with one finger and type a letter with another in case you want to capitalize it just like in a physical keyboard.
As always it will be great to get your feedback on these improvements.

If you’re both an iPhone and GMail user then you might have another reason to eschew any illicit unlocking and go straight for the 1.1.3 firmware upgrade: it quietly changes the connection between the Google email service and the Apple handset from POP to IMAP. Basically, that means that any changes performed on the iPhone - such as marking emails as read - are mirrored on the desktop GMail interface, and vice-versa.
“If you configured Gmail access on your iPhone by tapping the large ‘Gmail’ icon in mail setup, please note that installing software update 1.1.3 will automatically convert Gmail on your iPhone from POP access to IMAP access. This means that actions you take on your iPhone will now sync with actions in your Gmail web interface (i.e. messages you read on your iPhone will show up as ‘Read’ in the web interface). This also means that messages you delete on your iPhone will be moved to the Trash folder in the Gmail web interface, and thus deleted after 30 days. Please exercise caution when deleting messages, as this behavior is markedly different from POP access” Google FAQ

This is not confirmed. N41, hackint0sh iPhone moderator, posted a news saying they have completed the iPhone 1.1.3 hardware unlock. Without any photos and videos, N41 said with the help of Geohot (the first one who unlock iPhone in the world), hardware unlock is possible. The procedure is like this:
- Unlock the iPhone with firmware 1.1.3 (baseband 4.03.13)
- Downgrade the phone to 1.1.2 then jailbreak it for normally using.
- Phone will work at: firmware 1.1.2 and baseband 4.03.13.
This unlock method requires to physically open the iPhone. You cannot use 1.1.3 in the end since no jailbreak method is successful on 1.1.3. This is still a good sign because once 1.1.3 jailbreak method is found, hardware unlock out of the box iPhone (bootloader 4.6, and also 3.9) is possible and use the newest firmware 1.1.3.
Note nothing is confirmed and hardware unlock is not easy. I highly recommend all of you, DON’T UPDATE iPhone to 1.1.3 unless you are using official and authorized carriers.

This is a good tip for those of you who design web sites and applications geared toward the iPhone. Dan Dickinson posted instructions for creating the icon for your site that shows up on the springboard when someone creates a web clip for it.
You can also place the image in a link tag in the head of your document, like so:
<head>
<title>iHelloWorld</title>
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/whatever.jpg"/>
</head>
You can get more info at the iPhone Dev Center under “Create a WebClip Bookmark Icon”.

The much awaited Macworld 2008 keynote address has been delivered by Steve Jobs, and if you ask me one of the best things to be announced is the iPhone January update (aka iPhone Firmware v1.1.3). It was a year back when Steve Jobs had announced the revolutionary iPhone so probably the expectations were very high.
The new features in Apple iPhone firmware v1.1.3 are as mentioned below:
You can check out the YouTube video that was published by Gearlive:
ffects of Firmware v1.1.3 on Unlocks, JailBreaking and Native Third-Party iPhone applications:Though iPhone Firmware v1.1.3 is one of the most exciting firmware updates to be released by Apple as compared to previous firmware updates, this firmware v1.1.3 too breaks unlocks like AnySIM and so far there is no alternative to iPhone activation other than using iTunes and a standard AT&T account.
Also as you would expect, iPhone firmware v1.1.3 will wipe out all your native third-party iPhone applications.
So far the iPhone hacking geniuses have not been able to Jailbreak iPhone firmware v1.1.3 which means that getting your favorite third-party applications is also ruled out for now.
So if you are one of those who can’t think about using your iPhone without the native application then the advice would be to not upgrade.
However, despite the above warning if you want to still proceed with the firmware, launch your iTunes, because the new Apple iPhone January Firmware update (aka 1.1.3) is now available.
Apple has also released iTunes 7.6, which features support for iTunes Movie rentals and tweaks for the iPhone/iPod. The snippet from Software Update pertaining to the iPhone is as follows:
“Rent and download your favorite movies with iTunes on your computer or directly to your living room on Apple TV. Enjoy rented movies in sizes up to 720p HD with surround sound on your Apple TV and sizes up to DVD-quality on your computer. Transfer your rented movies from iTunes to your iPod or iPhone and enjoy them on the go.”
iTunes 7.6 brings Windows Vista 64-bit support which means Vista 64-bit users finally have an official method for synchronizing the iPhone.
