Where are the Refurbished iPhones?

This is an interesting story sent to us by one of our viewers. It is about a gentleman (David) who ordered a refurbished iPhone through AT&T and received a bag…yep, that’s it, nothing but the bag. The only reason this concerns me is because I know a few of you bought refurbished iPhone’s from AT&T during the last sale. Below is a just snippit from David’s blog.

I am a developer for Pegasus News. My team has been working on an application for the iPhone and was in need of hardware for testing, so when my brother mentioned that AT&T had refurbished iPhones on their site, I jumped on the deal knowing that stock at all local Apple stores was nonexistent. I place my order, everything goes through just fine, I’m a happy customer. I try to pull up my order status on AT&T’s site and get an error message telling that it might take 24 hours for information to be available in their system. This seems like a common enough requirement, so I wait patiently.

ONE WEEK AND FOUR BLOG POSTS LATER…

My wife calls to tell me she found the DHL delivery, but it’s not a box. It’s a shipping envelope. She asks if she should open it. I tell her please do.

“It’s just a bag.”
“It’s a what?”
“It’s a bag. It’s an empty plastic bag.”
“Well, um, er, is there anything else in the package at all? A note or anything?”
“There’s a shipping label. But this is just a bag like you’d get if you bought something in their store.”

(pause)

(sigh)

“I’ll call AT&T again.”

Read the entire blog entry HERE.

I am curious to know if anyone else is having this problem.

Next-gen iPhone to be powered by the sun?

sun iphoneiPhone owners may soon find themselves scrambling to find an open window- not a power outlet- to charge their cell phones in the future. Apple has filed a patent for a surprising new technology- the implementation of solar cells underneath the iPhone’s touchscreen. In the past, photovoltaic cells have been bulky and ugly, and required a direct line of sight with their source of energy. However, this new technology would benefit from the glass shield on the iPhone, as well as its fairly large screen size. If Apple manages to pull this one off- and we sure hope they do- the iPhone will truly become the world’s most potable device.

Mac OS X 10.5.3 fixes iPhone-iCal sync issues

While Windows-based iPhone users continue to experience a bevy of Outlook-related sync issues, Mac users have received a heavy dose of relief in the form of Mac OS X 10.5.3, which resolves persistent problems involving iPhone-to-iCal and vice versa synchronization.

Previous problems included issues with forward slashes “/” in contact names, the iPhone calendar not showing all iCal events or iCal not showing events entered on the iPhone and more.

Several users have now reported that Mac OS X 10.5.3, released yesterday, resolves this issue.

Apple Discussions poster Peter Jones, for instance, wrote:

“Just dropping a note to say that after upgrading to 10.5.3 my calendars seem to be syncing with my iPhone again. I tested in both directions. Before 10.5.3 calendars weren’t being sycned, no matter what I did. I tried every tip in this forum and nothing worked. The changes in 10.5.3 make me very happy. ”

3 to bring iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau

In a very brief press release, 3 has announced that they will be bringing the iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau, two markets where as of now, the iPhone is not officially available. Of all the countries and territories that 3 has coverage in, Hong Kong and Macau are the only ones that 3 has been rewarded a contract to carry and sell the iPhone in.

“Hong Kong and Macau, 29th May 2008 - Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited today announced that it has signed an agreement with Apple to bring the iPhone to Hong Kong and Macau later this year.” -Press Release

That is the whole press release. So there is quite a lack of details at the moment, but it has been assumed by some that this is the 3G iPhone. This would make sense, as there are 3G networks in both locations, and why bring the original iPhone “later this year”, when there will already be an upgrade that makes the device old news.

10.5.3 and Beta 6 iPhone SDK

Something interesting is hiding in 10.5.3. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what it does. But if it’s necessary to upgrade if you want to use the new SDK release, that means that there’s a something that ties 10.5.3 to new iPhone features.

So intrepid TUAW readers-slash-detectives, what can you find lurking in that new 10.5.3 firmware release that provides new and exciting iPhone functionality? Let us know in the comments. My completely wild pulling-it-from-the-posterior guess is something to do with AppStore support — or maybe the iNewton — or maybe “back to my iPhone” support — or… No really, I have no clue. Hopefully Uncle Steve will give us something nice for Keynotemas. Until then, see if you can figure it out.

iPhone Applicaiton - Retro Phone Project

Interface Mod

I recently ran across this mod and I think it is crazy SWEET! So, I thought I would pass it along. When installed, it will change all your system buttons/taps/pop-ups to the color you choose. This includes all your toggle options, SMS pop-ups, slider bars, badges, arrows, highlights, all the buttons in applications…etc. It is available in Black, Dark Blue (which I couldn’t get to download) , Green, Grey, Lemon (actually Lime), Light Blue (Teal), Lila (Purple), Orange and Yellow. This mod is available through the iPhoneFreakz source.

iphone interface mod

Note: Only install one color at a time and if you decide you do not like that color, just uninstall it and it will go back your stock color. I have noticed that it does make some badges and arrows look a little pixilated but it’s tolerable. Doug does not like that it changes the badge color, especially in the black Interface because it makes it hard to see. Doug and I have both installed, changed and uninstall this mod with no problem.

Big Clock on iPhone

To say that xClock is a simple application would be an understatement.  It’s a big, analog clock for your iPhone.

xclock

That’s it - just a clock - but it’s a full screen, fairly good-looking clock (IMO).  I like it, will probably keep it around for staring at during boring meetings :)

xClock is available on Installer now, from the BigBoss’s Apps and Things source, which is:
