Free Unlimited SMS Messages For iPhone

Macsimumnews provides a tip on how to send and receive unlimited SMS messages from your iPhone (assuming you have an unlimited data plan). The steps are as follows:

1. Create a new email message.
2. In the To: box, type 10digitnumber@teleflip.com. (1235551234@teleflip.com)
3. Type a message and click send.
4. The message will be sent to the cell phone with the number in the To: box
5. All recieved text messages will be sent to you as an email.
They use the free service Teleflip.com to route your email messages to SMS and back. The service is free, but only works in U.S. and Canada.

This means you won’t be getting instant notifications of these SMS->email messages since you have to wait until your email updates. This will be far less of an issue once MobileMe is deployed as you will be able to get Push email sent to your iPhone

MMiThemer - Great Source for Lots More iPhone Themes

If you’re big on iPhone themes and changing them round often, MMiThemer is a great app to look at.  It’s not brand new - I’ve been meaning to post about it for a little while now.

iphone mmithemer

MMiThemer gives you access to a large number of iPhone themes from the ModMyiFone forums site’s repository.  Most or all of these will not show up in Installer, so you need this app in order to see them.

ModMyiFone’s members have been a rich source of a large number of iPhone themes for quite a while now - and of many of the most creative and new sort of themes as well, things like Leaf and Vista Perfection, just to name two quick examples.

Before this app came along, I had a habit of checking the New Themes and Skins forum section at MMi quite regularly to see what new stuff was around - now it is much quicker to check things out via MMiThemer on the iPhone.

The app shows you Latest and Popular theme sections (Featured section does not work for me) and refreshes those each time you launch them.  Once you install a theme via MMiThemer, you still need to use Summerboard to manage and select your theme.

Apple releases new iPhone OS 2.0 build, iTunes Remote App, starts accepting apps

Apple has unveiled a slew of updates in preparation for the iPhone 3G and iPhone AppStore launch on July 11th. SDK 8 Apple has posted the eighth beta of the iPhone SDK to its developer site. Registered developers can now access Beta 8 at the iPhone Dev Center. Release notes reportedly state:

“Beta release 8 is compatible with the final iPhone OS 2.0 release and must be used to build and sign any iPhone OS application to be submitted to the App Store. As a reminder, you must be a member of the iPhone Developer Program to submit apps.”

iTunes 7.7

Beta 8 requires a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 which introduces MobileMe settings and a new Application syncing tab when the device is connected. You can pick and choose which applications are synced to the iPhone and iPod Touch. MobileMe support allows access to new push email, push calendars, push contacts, and bookmarks delivered over the air to your iPhone or iPod Touch.

iTunes Remote App

This pre-release version of iTunes hints at new functionality for a previously unannounced iPhone and iPod Touch application:

“Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.”

Apple will be releasing a free app from the App Store that allows you to remotely control iTunes in your home from your iPhone or iPod Touch, presumably using a Wi-Fi connection.

App Acceptance

Apple also sent out an email notice to developers that they are accepting applications to the iTunes App Store. The email reads:

“Get started by downloading the eighth beta version of the iPhone OS, available in the iPhone Dev Center. With this new version of the iPhone OS you can conduct final testing and prepare your application for submission to the App Store.”

Use your iPhone to remotely control iTunes

I’ve thought for some time that it would be awesome if I could control iTunes from my iPhone. I tend to just let my tunes play throughout my house, as my speakers can be heard throughout most of the house. Unfortunately when I want to pause the music or change a song, I have to run to my computer. Well it seems that Apple already has something up their sleeve in this department.

For those that have downloaded the pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 (for developers) there was a little something snuck into that pesky ‘Read Me’ that most of us simply skip through. The important snipit is below.

Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home — a free download from the App Store.

I would venture to guess that you’ll be limited to controlling iTunes on only the PC that the iPhone is synced with, which shouldn’t be an issue for most people. This particular feature had been rumored to be coming since late April. It’s good to see some of these rumors coming true.

Featured iPhone Theme: Blacklight

blacklight iphone theme

Seems like it’s been a little quieter on the iPhone themes front lately, just as it has been on jailbreak apps generally - but here is one that caught my eye today - the new Blacklight iPhone theme.

Quite different and striking looking I think.  Blacklight is an iPhone Summerboard theme, created by Allen from Planet-iPhones.

The theme works best with the Hide Icon Labels and Hide Dock Labels turned on within SMBPrefs.

Blacklight is available now in Installer an should not require any additional sources be added in order to see it …

Fix cookies on your iPhone to remember passwords longer

iphone cookieI’ve been getting more and more frustrated with the fact that every time I load up Google Reader on my iPhone, I have to log in again. I tried it with and without my 1Password bookmarklet, checked my javascript and cookie settings, all to no avail. And it’s not just Reader, everywhere I turn, I’m logging in again. It was with great relief that I discovered the cure.iRemember is a lightweight hack that makes a few tweaks and tells you it’s “safe to uninstall” before Installer even finishes cleaning up. Do you have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch with a foggy memory? Add http://repo.ispazio.net to your sources in Installer, refresh and search for iRemember. Your favorite web apps will give you a much warmer welcome.

App Ideas for iPhone 3G

So iPhone 3G is 3 weeks away and you are planning to make a super awesome iPhone app that you would like to sell in Apple stores, thanks to profit 70-30 profit sharing. Here are some of the ideas that would help my life if you do implement them. Also, make sure I get a free copy.

  1. iPhone Remote Desktop Client - This little application lets me view my work/home desktop while i am having coffee with my friend.
  2. iPhone Alert Service - I should be able to set up alerts based on my location as well as time. I recall an MIT study that came with this idea. Basically when I driving by my grocery store, the To-Do item I set up at home, should pop-up to remind me I am out of beer.
  3. iP2PPhone - Once again, I am having coffee with my friend and he has this super hot picture of Megan Fox on his iPhone’s wallpaper. He should be able to transfer that to me without need to send an email.
  4. iStream - If I want to treat my iPhone camera as a webcam like streaming device, possibly to my blog page, I should be able to do that. Obviously, my blog is configured to store the stream and archive them by location and/or time.
  5. iQuickCall - Lets me send a quick voice message to multiple friends. Basically, open the app, record a message, select a bunch of contacts and send. How cool it would be send a group of friends “Movie at 7:30. Who’s up?”?
