iPhone Sales Has Tripled Since Price Cut?

Apple 2.0 puts faith in a recent note by Gene Munster claiming that the pace of iPhone sales has tripled since the price break.

By Munster’s reckoning, Apple and AT&T (T) were selling an average of 9,000 iPhones a day before the price reduction, which would have put their quarterly sales at 594,000 as of Sept. 5. The two companies had already sold 270,000 phones in the previous quarter. To reach 1 million by Sept. 9, they would have had to sell 136,000 more phones, or 27,000 a day — a 200% increase.

It should be noted that Munster and other analysts were initially extremely bullish on early iPhone sales numbers, claiming that Apple had sold upwards of 500,000 on opening weekend. Such high expectations were unfounded, as Apple announced that 270,000 had been sold.

Munster’s latest claims appear to be a little more thorough, with accompanying surveys of retail stores. Munster notes that such a large surge is not sustainable, and believes sales will stabilize at a 50% increase, or 1.28 million by the end of the quarter.

Free iPhone Games: Freeverse brings Bing Bang Sudoku to iPhone

If you are one of those casual gamers who has been addicted to Sudoku, you now have one more reason to smile for buying the iPhone.

Freeverse, the leading developer and publisher of causual game for the Mac has announced the Big BangSudoku for the iPhone; a month since PopCap Games, another leading developer of casual games had announced a custom version of their flagship game “Bejeweled” for iPhone.

Freeverse’s iPhone Sudoku like PopCap’s Bejeweled has been customized for iPhone’s safari browser using its web 2.0 capabilities and is not a native iPhone application or a hack. As you would expect they have made full use of iPhone’s stunning 3.5 inch display and multi-touch interface.

Freeverse claims that the iPhone version will provide undistinguishable gaming experience from a stand-alone software application. Though the buttons are a little small; the game apparently seems to be best played in portrait mode as in case of landscape mode the screen needs continuous scrolling. Like PopCap Games, Freeverse too is offering the iPhone version of their game for free.

As per Freeverse, the latest research has shown that the use of memory and puzzle games can help create new pathways in the brain, keeping the mind sharp, or at least more limber; so you have another reason to give this a shot.

To play the Big Bang Sudoku using iPhone go to freeverse.com/iphone using iPhone’s Safari browser. As always, don’t forget to share your experience of playing the free iphone games (especially while using AT&T’s Edge network).

On a side note; another big news coming out of Apple’s special event earlier this week is that most of the iPhone hacks, iphone themes and games should also work on Apple’s all-new iPod Touch as it is the iPhone without the phone.

8GB iPhone Price Drop, 4GB iPhone Discontinued

iphone price drop

With the new heat the iPhone will be getting from the iPod Touch, Apple decided to lower the barrier of entry to a much more palatable $399, and that’s for the 8GB model, which just yesterday was rocking at $599 pricepoint. It also looks like Apple is doing away with the 4GB version, which was seriously lagging behind its big brother in sales, but there’s no official word yet.

So if iphone price was ever a factor when you are consider buying, that will be less of a problem now. Of course, if you’ve just bought an iPhone at the previous $599 price, you’re probably a bit mad right now.

iPhone battery explodes mid-hardware unlock

While we love to hear about your attempts at hacking your iPhones, we also love to hear that all your digits are still intact! That’s why we’d like all enterprising iPhone modders to pay attention to what happened to Hackint0sh forum member Pipas, during what appears to be an attempt to unlock the handset using the hardware method.

“We were so happy, all the iphone software part was done, so we started opening the iphone. The antenna cover was a bit tricky but eventually it came off. Then we started to open the metal cover (after taking out the 3 screws) and PUFF, up it went in smoke, I think my collegue must have touched something. It literally went up in black smoke. I was so hot that when I tried to pick it up I burnt my fingers. So, this is for shure the most difficult part of the whole process”

iphone battery

Current thinking is that it was a shorted circuit across the iPhone’s Li-Ion battery pack which, since it’s not meant to be user-replaceable, probably lacks the shielding that such units designed for us mortals to touch would have.

The key thing to remember is that even though your iPhone may be switched off, the iphone battery still contains a charge and there’s still a current going through the electronics inside. These guys were lucky to get away with burnt fingers - we’d like all of our readers to keep all of their faculties!

5 Different Ways to Send Email from iPhone

s we know Apple iPhone offers many methods to send mail. It would huge step forward if Apple has managed to designe a single universall “compose email” button which would be placed in almost each application. But for this moment there are several different ways to create a new message across different applications:

* Compose Button. The compose button, which looks like a square with a pencil through it, appears at the bottom right of many Mail screens and in the SMS Text application at the top-right of the screen. The Reply/Forward button appears just to the left of the Compose icon in Mail. Tap this to reply to a message or forward it on to another party.

 * Envelope Icon. In the Notes application, the envelope icon appears on the bottom of the page, to the left of the garbage can. Tap it to email the current note.

iphone mail 2

* Use-For Icon. The use-photo-for icon appears at the bottom left of the screen. It looks like a rectangle with an arrowjumping out of it-the arrow is basically a mirror of the Reply/Forward button. Tap this and select Email Photo from the pop-up menu.

*Share. You can share YouTube video and Safari URLs by email. Tap the Share button on the Information page in YouTube and in the navigate-to-URL screen in Safari. To find this in YouTube, tap the blue reveal button located to the right of the video name. In Safari, tap on the URL bar and then look up and to the left.

The main question here is: Why Apple has designed to use so many different methods to do essentially the same simple task - sending email? What do you think?

iPhonesimfree.com has started accepting orders for software-only iPhone hack

iPhonesimfree.com had published an FAQ on 29th August in which they had claimed to be releasing the software-only iPhone unlocking method in 48-72 hours. I have just received a tip from Trash,  that folks at iphonesimfree.com have sent emails announcing the availability of the software-only iPhone hack. The emails subject line is “iPhone unlocking - WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING ORDERS”. More details available after the jump.

Unlock iPhone

As per the email they have started taking only bulk orders with pricing starting at $36 each for 50 licenses to $25 each for 5000 licenses and do not plan to sell the software-only unlocking method to end users. This is what they had to say about selling it to end users:

“Iphonesimfree.com is a wholesale only company. Although we could, we do not and will not sell directly to end users, because we want to work together with our valuable resellers as a team and not interfere in their business.”

I guess it is to cover themselves from the legal hurdles which had delayed the iPhone hack from being released to the public as soon as Engadget first demonstrated the unlocking method to work on T-Mobile. So how will it all work?

“The reseller or his/her customer must install on the iphone our software, available by mail or through direct download from our site.  This is a standard .app file and once installed on the iphone it will show up as a springboard icon on the main screen. The reseller must log into our back office and enter the required data specific to that iphone (his license credit will be substracted). Once done, the reseller or the customer must run the .app, which will communicate via the iphone wifi to our server. If the iphone has been registered, the software will proceed to unlock the iphone.”

So for the end user it would not be as simple as unlocking the iPhone themselves. They would either have to buy a new iPhone, in case, the reseller sells the unlock code only bundled with the iPhone, or buy it from one of those resellers offering the unlock service at a premium. Here is what they have to say regarding guarantees against future updates:
We CANNOT guarantee that this software will work after any future updates for the iphone.  It does currently work on all firmware versions, up to and including, 1.02.resellers an updated version of our software for each firmware update, it is in our interest, but we do NOT guarantee that we will be able to do so.

The delivery date for the unlocking software is September 4th, 2007. Stay tuned at iPhone lover for further updates on this story. Thanks Trash for sending this in!

Will Next iPhone Support GPRS?

Apple is hard at work making the next version of the iPhone worth every penny of its subsidized $499 price tag. The next iPhone probably due out at Macworld or early spring of ‘08 will incorporate a GPS receiver chip closely matching the SiRFstarIII from SiRF Technology. Even though the StarIII’s power consumption is a bit higher than Apple would like it is considered the best chip for a mobile device of this kind, having the capability to receive signals from 20 different satellites simultaneously and a super fast First Fix Time.

Because of the high expectations placed upon the iPhone, Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover.

The first phone/GPS devise to fully utilize this technology is CNS-4320 from DiXCOM. The CNS-4320 hybrid device uses GSM radio with GPRS data for text and multimedia messaging. DiXCOM has also equipped the CNS with the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for real time traffic information, a technology Apple is thought to be developing.

iFuntastic v3.03: One-time unjailing, custom ringtones, support for PowerPC

Funstastic v3.03 is here and the good news for those who have PowerPCs is that the latest version of the iPhone unlocking now supports PowerPC. The other great enhancement is that the file browser will not only let you gain access to iPhone’s file system it will also allows you to install the latest native iPhone application. Read on for more details.

bitSplit, after about 3 weeks of silence has just released v3.03 of iFuntastic and if v2.5 was great with the addition of the iPhone file browser, the latest version is even better.

One of the most important new features in v3 is “Unshackling”. No longer will you have to un-jail and re-jail your iPhone for every modifiaction. Once you unshackle, you’re free to make any modifications you please while simultaneously maintaining iTunes’ ability to access the phone. Very sweet.

The Home Screen section has been significantly updated. Just as you could in previous versions, iFuntastic allows you to rearrange the icons on your home screen, but it gets even cooler. You can now have multiple home screens with a different set of icons on each. Take that, Spaces. On top of that, you know have the ability to put iphone backgrounds on each home screen as well as rotate them. Can you say “useful”?

Ringtones has also been updated. Remember that handy tip on getting free iphone ringtones from iTunes? Now you can use iFuntastic to rip iTunes previews for you. Simply create a playlist of songs from the iTunes Music Storeand drag the exported version into iFuntastic. The songs are downloaded from the store and uploaded right into your iPhone.

The new File Manager is awfully cool. It can be used to install new iphone software, save and delete files, and everything in between. iFuntastic also allows you to fiddle with system images and change the carrier logo, as you could in the past.

According to bitSplit, (summarized) changes since the last version are:
* PowerPC support! Finally. Thanks for keeping the faith :-)
* One-time unjailing - called ‘Unshackling’.
* Drag and drop any file onto the phone in the new ‘File Manager’ (formerly Browser :-)
* Edit text directly on the phone.
* Drag and drop installation of native applications - no restart of the phone necessary.
* Info page: a one-stop-shop for all documentation (still sparsely populated right now, sorry.)
* Troubleshooting page: a one-stop-shop for pummeling the phone and inquiring about its status.
* Much improved ringtone installation.
* Drag and drop replacement of system sounds.
* Completely reworked Home Screen Editor. Place applications anywhere you want them (gaps are OK.)
* Support for multiple home screen ‘pages’. Have up to 80 applications at your fingertips!
* Custom home screen ‘wallpaper’, better called home screen backgrounds, to distinguish from the ‘real’ wallpaper.

Install applications on your iPhone without hacking

iphone installer

Good news everybody! Have you wanted to try out all those great-sounding third-party iPhone applications? Did the hacking part of it put you off? NullRiver has released a simple iPhone GUI installer for Mac OS X.

Download the latest version of AppTapp installer to your Mac and then dock your iPhone, quit iTunes, and launch the program. The software downloads a copy of the latest Apple Firmware; you choose whether you’re using Firmware 1.0.0, 1.0.1 or 1.0.2. It takes a few minutes to download the files from Apple using a good connection and then the software copies some files to your iPhone. When finished, your iPhone restarts and the Installer app appears on your iPhone home screen. The Installer application gives you access to nearly every third party application that has thus far been released by iPhone developers. I tested the entire install procedure on my G4 Mac and it worked flawlessly.

Oh, and if you’re looking to try out those software packages I posted about earlier today, open Installer App, and install “Community Sources”.

AppTapp is a Universal Binary, in Beta, and free.

Update: Readers ask: “Will this mess up my firmware updates?” Answer: Possibly–I’ll try to get a firmer answer out of the developers. Use at your own risk, of course.

First native iPhone IM app: Apollo IM in beta

Big news today on the iPhone software development front. This morning brings the release of both a native instant messaging client and a native IRC client.

Apollo IM just entered Version Negative 1, an early beta release. It is available as well via Installer.app. Apollo IM has been developed by “Arminius” and offers iPhone-native instant messaging capabilities. Future releases will support file transfer as well as MSN/Yahoo/Jabber/Gtalk support.

“Pogi”’s iRCm provides a GUI-based Internet Relay Chat client for your iPhone. You can join channels, issue raw IRC commands and take part in conversations. iRCm is available for download at Google Code, and packages have been loaded for both Installer.app and PXL.

Both applications have been developed with Shimmer/PXL, the iPhone auto-updates library. Shimmer allows iPhone code to “call home” and update themselves when new versions become available. Both developers are looking for feedback and plan to use this update feature to allow the program to keep growing via its installed base.

If you’re interested in developing for either application, pop over to Google Code and download the latest SVN. Both projects offer a great opportunity to get involved in open source.
