Spore demoed as native iPhone game

During today’s “software roadmap” special event in Cupertino, Electronic Arts demonstrated a version of its upcoming game “Spore’ as a native iPhone application. In Spore, users control the evolution of species from single-celled organisms up through land-walking creatures.

The game makes full use of the iPhone’s accelerometer.

Addictive iPhone Game:iPhysics

Physics was one of the few subjects in college we didn’t fail (with English, Math, Philosophy, Psychology and Philosophy rounding out the list of ones we did), so we take exceptional interest in this iPhysics game. Just use your finger to create new objects that you can fling around inside your iPhone/iTouch using the game’s built-in physics engine. It’s no ragdoll getting hit in the nuts (one of my college programming projects), but it’ll pass the time on the can. [Installerapps]

SNES Emulator for iPhone and iPod touch

After playing with a NES, Game Boy, and Playstation 1 emulators, a current release of a SNES emulator has been released in a beta version. The video shows the emulator running at promising frame rate. As of now the beta release isn’t open to the public, but can be obtained if you’re impatient by donating to the dev team. No idea when it’ll be out but I know I still have to finish Zelda: The Minish Cap on the Game Boy emulator.

Finger Fracture Game Concept

Notcot reposts some very interesting concept designs and screenshots of a possible iPhone / iPod touch game, which uses multi-touch to provide a unique controller method for a skateboarding game.

Sunset: an FPS RPG for the iPhone

This is the last thing I expected to see what can be done with the iPhone SDK, but nevertheless here it is. Donald Hays sent us a link to “Sunset,” which is a game he wrote for the iPhone. I was skeptical when he described it as “a 3D RPG,” because this is the iPhone we’re talking about — the thing can’t even run Flash — but lo and behold, that’s exactly what it is. The graphics are homemade (he says he been working on the game since August of ‘07), and the genre conventions are many (it’s an RPG in the old Dungeons of Daggorath style), so you run around, kill stuff, complete objectives, and level up), but in this case it’s not the game that’s so amazing, but where and how you’re playing it.

iPhone FPS RPG

Seriously — go to Donald’s site on your iPhone and give it a look yourself. The game’s even got an inventory system and a save system built into it. Very impressive work.

Update: Donald has also written up a postmortem of making the game. The first answer to the question in your mind: it’s mostly Javascript, and yes, it sounds like a hell of a lot of crazy coding. The end project is pretty incredible, though.

The Best iPhone Game:Labyrinth 0.4

Labyrinth was one of the best games created for the iPhone, it made good use of the phone’s accelerometers and showed the true potential of 3rd party apps for the iPhone. Unfortunately, the popular game was recently updated by its developer to v1.0 adding a timer (which was way too quick) and a demo only version…meaning that now the game was not free anymore.

The new version adds some new features like calibration and probably fixes some bugs…but the full game costs $7. If you think its worth it…go ahead and buy it, if not then we got your piece of cake! Download Labyrinth v0.4 and follow the following instructions to get it working :

1. Extract the zip file to your Desktop

2. Open WinSCP and connect to your iPhone via SSH

3. Go to the root/Applications folder and Drop the extracted folder in there

4. Next go into the Labyrinth.app folder and right-click on the file labyrinth and set permission to 0755

5. Reboot your phone

A Christmas Game For iPhone

snowglobe game for iphone

Christmas is approaching, and what better way to wile away a minute or two than with a virtual snow globe? The kind folks at Pop Art created this iPhone Snow Globe that one ’shakes’ by changing the orientation of the iPhone.

It’ll amuse you for a moment, and it is free so why not? That’s what the holiday season is all about, right?

Cool iPhone games : BlackJack and Spy Hunter clone

Up until now, most native iPhone games, excepting some great emulators (NES and Gameboy Advance), have been less than entertaining. There are two relative newcomers, however, that beyond showing off the iPhone’s touchscreen and accelerometer potential for gaming are actually fun.

The first is iBlackJack. All you need to know about this game, aside from it being blackjack, are: double-tap to hit, swipe down to double down, swipe right to stand. It works like a charm, and has some of the most polished graphics we’ve seen yet in any native iPhone application. If only this game were linked to an online gambling site; we could be losing hundreds from anywhere!

The second is a Spy Hunter clone called “ContraSense”. All you need to know about this game: It’s Spy Hunter, and you tilt the iPhone to steer. This title, though very simple, gets kudos for its excellent use of the accelerometer and genuinely fun gameplay.

Both of these titles are available under the “Games” section in Installer.app

ScummVM: Emulation Engine brings LucasArts and Sierra Games to iPhone

Folks at Gizmodo are reporting that ScummVM, the emulation engine that allows you to play LucasArts and Sierra games, is officially released and now fully working on the iPhone. It means that you can play some of the popular games such as Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones etc on your iPone (works on iPod Touch as well).

ScummVM

If you are wondering how would you be using the controls on the iPhone to play games like  Indiana Jones then below are some directions of how to use iPhone multi-touch user interface to play these games.

  • left click - Single tap
  • Right click - Hold one finger on screen where you want to click, single tap another
  • ESC - Hold one finger on screen, double tap another
  • F5 (menu) - Hold one finger on screen, swipe another down from top to bottom
  • F 0-9 keys - Press the keyboard button directly under the appropriate number
  • Pause - Keyboard spacebar
  • Toggle - Click+Drag mode    Hold one finger on screen, swipe another up from bottom to top. In this mode, a mouse click is sent immediately when you touch the screen, drags to wherever you slide your finger, and releases where you lift your finger. Useful for Monkey Island 3: The Curse of Monkey Island and Full Throttle.
  • Suspend - Press the button.
  • Quit- Press and hold the button for 5-6 seconds.

As you can see quite an innovative way of using iPhone’s revolutionary multi-touch interface.

Here are the games that have been tested and are fully supported currently:

  • Day of the Tentacle
  • The Dig
  • Flight of the Amazon Queen
  • Full Throttle
  • Gobliiins
  • Gobliins 2
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  • King’s Quest 3
  • Loom
  • Maniac Mansion
  • Monkey Island 1: The Secret of Monkey Island (best game ever)
  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge (ok, maybe this is the best game ever)
  • Sam & Max Hit the Road (another must-have)
  • Simon the Sorcerer 1
  • Simon the Sorcerer 2
  • Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders

Overall most of the games work very well on the iPhone expect for couple of issues reported by Gizmodo:

  • Since the resolution of the iPhone is higher than the native resolution of these games, the graphics don’t use the full screen, keeping its original pixel size.
  • Some of the more modern games, like Monkey Island 3, still have some performance problems.

If this has got you excited and you are looking to install ScummVM on your iPhone, here are some instructions which you will find useful courtesy ScummVM Wiki:

  • Open Installer.app on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.
  • Tap the “Sources” button in the bottom-right corner.
  • Tap the “Edit” button in the top-right corner.
  • Tap the “Add” button in the top-left corner.
  • Enter http://urbanfanatics.com/scummvm.xml into the text area and tap “OK”.
  • Installer will refresh your sources. It may close. If so, reopen it.

In case you need more assistance in installing it, you can get in touch with the iPhone hacking geniuses themselves over at ScummVM’s official site (link here).
