Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

If you’re a lover of those old LED football games, you’ll be happy to hear Mark Helmuth will be bringing the fun game to the iPhone. Based on the 1970’s handheld games, this game will have all the appeal of the old ones with touch capabilities thrown in.

Free iPhone 3G Games

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

great (and free) games. Title links jump to the appropriate page in the iTunes App Store.

Cannon Challenge - Discovery Interactive
From the Discovery Channel/.com team comes a very cool strategy game that requires you to choose the elevation and velocity of a cannon that is used to destroy what we can only assume are Al Queda/Communist/Alien strongholds. Very interesting and occasionally frustrating for those of us without advanced degrees in mathematics or physics. Or, you know, warfare…

PegJump - Jerry Jones
Ever been to a Cracker Barrel? Then you know about this game (yeah yeah, I know it’s an ages old game, but let me use my own frame of reference for this one) - the big difference is that this version doesn’t have little bits of food particles or the germs of hundreds of weary travelers all over it.

The goal is to remove pegs by jumping the other pegs - until only one peg (presumably some sort of bionic super peg) remains. Addictive, well programmed and e-coli free.

Hanoi - Ian Marsh
Ever been to a Cracker Barrel? Just kidding.

Hanoi is the iPhone implementation of the classic ‘Towers of Hanoi’ game - one that has puzzled people for hundreds of years and has spawned one of the most mind-numbingly geeky Wikipedia pages ever created.

Ian Marsh’ version of the game is slick, entertaining and quite challenging - even for those of us without a PhD.

Cube Runner - Andy Qua
Remember in Star Wars, when the TIE fighters were flying around inside the Death Star, avoiding obstacles and occasionally crashing into them only to explode into fire balls - thus killing both the human pilot and the sad little R2 unit thoughtlessly stashed away in the back of the ship?

Well, imagine now that the TIE fighters were actually arrows and the Death Star were a flat surface that was comprised entirely of SUPER DESTRUCTIVE KILLER cubes. Yeah, exactly.

Labyrinth - Carl Loodberg
If you’ve ever played with one of these little wooden maze games in real life, you know how thoroughly frustrating they can be - mostly because the ball gets lost and you’re left with a chunk of wood with holes in it. Not nearly as much fun as it sounds like, trust me.

The iPhone version, however, is a blast. The free version of Labyrinth contains ten different levels - all enhanced by awesome accelerator support and a visually pleasing display of various artificial woodgrains. Best part: you never lose your balls. (Yes, I am aware this section reads like it was written by a 12 year old boy…)

That’s it - five games you may not have been aware of - mainly because they aren’t Tap Tap or Sudoku or flash light related.
:)

Free iPhone Application : MotionX Dice

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Get at App Store

motionx dice

Unlike other similar applications, this one has realistic simulation of the dice movement and not just numbers showing up at the end…

Unfortunately the movement of dices is not proportional to how strong you shake the iPhone. One would expect the more you shake the faster dices are moving. However the movement is realistic and one can even select various dice types:

iPhone on Level with PS2,Xbox

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Among the hardcore gaming crowd, John Carmack’s work with id Software is legendary for producing 3D gaming works such as Doom and Quake. Although Carmack is clearly comfortable pushing the limits of PC hardware, his latest interest appears to be in mobile games – and his sights are now set on the Apple iPhonehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_iPhone .

Zoom”We wanted to do something for the iPhonehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone , but we just didn’t have the scheduling or the resources available,” Carmack said to Forbes. “I really regret not having something at launch.”

The launch that Carmack referred to was the launch of the App Storehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/App_Store  on iTunes, which coincided with the release of the iPhone 3G. The App Store allows iPhone and iPodIPod  Touch users to download and install applications and games for use on their mobile device.

While Carmack won’t have the usual dual-core CPU and blazing AMD or NVIDIA GPUs on tap, he seems more than confident that the iPhone is capable of delivering the graphical goods.

“The iPhone, as a device, is in the same generation power-wise as the PS2 or Xboxhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox ,” he said. “The graphics are a little lower but the RAM is a lot higher. … You could easily spend $10 million on an iPhone game, but the market just can’t support that yet.”

Anna Kang, president of id Mobile, explained that the game for iPhone would be based off an existing id property, meaning that it could be from id’s roster of first-person shooters, the old classic Commander Keen, or even the lesser known Orcs & Elveshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elf  game from the NintendoNintendo  DS.

Carmack isn’t letting on that type of game it’ll be, but he intends to impress. “We have a title we want to develop exclusively for iPhone,” he added. “I’m not announcing anything specifically, but it would be a graphical tour de force.”

How to share apps between iPhones?

Friday, July 25th, 2008

The fact that my wife and I both have iPhones is a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because well… we both have iPhones. But it’s also a curse. It has become another gadget to upgrade, to pimp up and gulp- to depreciate quickly . We were both going to get the 2nd generation iPhones but after weighting in the fact that the original ones are upgradable via software, it became hard to justify the cost of a whole new phone. Sorry, 2 new phones. So we opted for the software update, which gave us in a lot of ways a new phone. The upgrade was free, but the mostly inexpensive apps add up. This got me thinking about Fairplay, Apple’s DRM technology used throughout the iTunes store for music and now applications as well. Fairplay allows you to register up to 5 computers and unlimited iPods/iPhones synced to those computers. So… it should be easy for my wife and I to share iPhone apps with each other as long as both our iTunes are authorized to use them. All we need to do is authorize both accounts in both computers and re-download the apps. This could work in Windows, but why would I right?

Here’s a step by step tutorial on how to do it.

Scenario

I have 2 Macs, 2 iPhones, 2 iTunes accounts.

I used one account to buy a game, and another account to buy another one. The goal is to have both games playable on both phones legally with no hacks.

Solution

Have each computer be authorized for both accounts. Re-download apps on 2nd computer with 1st computer iTunes account.

Step 1: Authorize Computers

I step into my wife’s mac, launch iTunes, log out of her iTunes Store account and log in with mine.

Step 1: Log Out and In

Step 1: Log Out and In

Still inside iTunes,  I go to the app store and click the Buy App button on the application I had bought in my computer.

Step 2 Re-Download
Step 2: re-download

iTunes knows I already paid for this and just let’s be re-download it without charging me again.

Step 2: Confirm

Step 2: Confirm

The app then begins to download.

Step 2: downloading
Step 2: downloading

Once the download is complete, it now shows in the Applications section of iTunes.

Step 2: downloaded
Step 2: downloaded

I can now log out of my iTunes Store account and log her’s back in.

Step 1: Log Out and In

Step 1: Log out and in

Step 3: Sync & Play

I can plug her phone in now and sync.

Step 3: sync

Step 3: sync

The app should transfer without any fuss.

Step 3: syncing

Step 3: syncing

Once synced, it shows on her phone ready for playing.

Step 4: play

Step 3: play

And now both our kids can take over our phones and drain those batteries out.

Step 4: playing

Step 3: playing

Enjoy.

Free iPhone Games - Aurora Feint

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Okay people. I admit it. I’m obsessed. Not only has downloading iPhone Apps become a favorite pastime, I also can’t stop playing Aurora Feint. This game was a free app and I was blown away. I mean, for a free application, this game has great graphics, sound and game play.

free 3g iphone game

It starts out like your standard Tetris or Bejeweled, requiring that you line up three like-colored blocks before they are eliminated. However, you quickly realize you can do much more with this game than its predecessors. Flip the phone in any direction and the blocks feel the force of gravity, providing you with more options. Then, leveling up grants you new powers and abilities. You level up by earning enough crystals in order to purchase new powers. There’s a mini-map and everything. However, it seems a big update is in store, wherein MMO attributes will be added and a story line interwoven according to the Aurora Feint FAQs.

The only downside is the way this intensely graphic game drains the iPhone’s battery life. But, that seems to be a problem with most of the applications. Oh, and this game is a big time-waster. I mean it, people. Hours can be lost with all the block breaking!

iPhone Games - Tap Tap Revenge

Friday, July 18th, 2008

iphone taptaprevenge

Everyone that knows me is aware that I’m addicted to games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It’s only natural that I would be drawn to the game Tap Tap Revenge for the iPhone. It’s a relatively simple concept, much the same as either of the two rhythm games I mentioned. You’ve got orbs that come down your screen that correspond to music being played.

There are only four songs included with the game which are separated into four difficulties. Two of the tracks are used twice (in higher difficulties) effectively giving you six tracks to master. Sure, that’s not a lot of music, but the game is free, which more than makes up for it. You can also currently download four additional tracks to the game. It’s very possible that more will be added over time. I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for something to pass the time with.

Agile Forces - New iPhone Battle Strategy Game

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Fancy a bit of military conquest on the iPhone?  Plotting tank attacks and Maneuvering your infantry into perfect positions to route the enemy? Cool.  I know I do - and Agile Forces is just the game to satisfy those needs on the iPhone.

It’s a turn-based strategy game that offers multiple levels of war strategy scenarios, plays very well on the iPhone and has some very nice features.  Agile Forces is from Agile Mobile - the same folks who just brought out what I think is the best IM client for the iPhone - Agile Messenger - a couple days back.

Here’ some of what I like about Agile Forces:

  • Bite-sized and useful tutorials that get you up to speed on using different types of units (from artillery to mechanics and medics), making good use of terrain, and general game strategy
  • You get to blow stuff up with tanks and rocket launchers and such
  • Simple but good graphics - nothing super flashy or spectacular, but fun and good for the sort of game this is
  • Playability is great - as in, everything works well, runs fast, and getting up and running with it is quick
  • You’ve got artillery and tanks and you can blow stuff up
  • The game strikes a good balance between being easy to play and still being challenging - in terms of difficulty posed by each battle scenario
  • And … tanks and blowing stuff up :)

 cool iphone game

The current ‘demo’ version of the game offers 5 single player missions.  There are plans for more missions (up to 100) and an online (play against others) capabilities coming in (probably paid-for) versions of Agile Forces.  That sounds very promising - I’d love to see the online multiplayer version come along soon.

Agile Mobile has also recently announced that both Agile Messenger and Agile Forces will be coming to the iPhone App Store.

Big splash from Agile Mobile this week - two very nice apps that are well worth trying.  Agile Forces is available on Installer now, in the Games section

Teaser Video for Rolando: a Platform/Puzzler Game for iPhone

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

A new video teaser of upcoming iPhone game Rolando has been posted at TouchArcade. Few details are provided, but the game is described as a physics-based platform/puzzler which has been designed from the ground up for the iPhone. The Youtube Video is impressive.
