iFuntastic v3.03: One-time unjailing, custom ringtones, support for PowerPC

Funstastic v3.03 is here and the good news for those who have PowerPCs is that the latest version of the iPhone unlocking now supports PowerPC. The other great enhancement is that the file browser will not only let you gain access to iPhone’s file system it will also allows you to install the latest native iPhone application. Read on for more details.

bitSplit, after about 3 weeks of silence has just released v3.03 of iFuntastic and if v2.5 was great with the addition of the iPhone file browser, the latest version is even better.

One of the most important new features in v3 is “Unshackling”. No longer will you have to un-jail and re-jail your iPhone for every modifiaction. Once you unshackle, you’re free to make any modifications you please while simultaneously maintaining iTunes’ ability to access the phone. Very sweet.

The Home Screen section has been significantly updated. Just as you could in previous versions, iFuntastic allows you to rearrange the icons on your home screen, but it gets even cooler. You can now have multiple home screens with a different set of icons on each. Take that, Spaces. On top of that, you know have the ability to put iphone backgrounds on each home screen as well as rotate them. Can you say “useful”?

Ringtones has also been updated. Remember that handy tip on getting free iphone ringtones from iTunes? Now you can use iFuntastic to rip iTunes previews for you. Simply create a playlist of songs from the iTunes Music Storeand drag the exported version into iFuntastic. The songs are downloaded from the store and uploaded right into your iPhone.

The new File Manager is awfully cool. It can be used to install new iphone software, save and delete files, and everything in between. iFuntastic also allows you to fiddle with system images and change the carrier logo, as you could in the past.

According to bitSplit, (summarized) changes since the last version are:
* PowerPC support! Finally. Thanks for keeping the faith :-)
* One-time unjailing - called ‘Unshackling’.
* Drag and drop any file onto the phone in the new ‘File Manager’ (formerly Browser :-)
* Edit text directly on the phone.
* Drag and drop installation of native applications - no restart of the phone necessary.
* Info page: a one-stop-shop for all documentation (still sparsely populated right now, sorry.)
* Troubleshooting page: a one-stop-shop for pummeling the phone and inquiring about its status.
* Much improved ringtone installation.
* Drag and drop replacement of system sounds.
* Completely reworked Home Screen Editor. Place applications anywhere you want them (gaps are OK.)
* Support for multiple home screen ‘pages’. Have up to 80 applications at your fingertips!
* Custom home screen ‘wallpaper’, better called home screen backgrounds, to distinguish from the ‘real’ wallpaper.

Install applications on your iPhone without hacking

iphone installer

Good news everybody! Have you wanted to try out all those great-sounding third-party iPhone applications? Did the hacking part of it put you off? NullRiver has released a simple iPhone GUI installer for Mac OS X.

Download the latest version of AppTapp installer to your Mac and then dock your iPhone, quit iTunes, and launch the program. The software downloads a copy of the latest Apple Firmware; you choose whether you’re using Firmware 1.0.0, 1.0.1 or 1.0.2. It takes a few minutes to download the files from Apple using a good connection and then the software copies some files to your iPhone. When finished, your iPhone restarts and the Installer app appears on your iPhone home screen. The Installer application gives you access to nearly every third party application that has thus far been released by iPhone developers. I tested the entire install procedure on my G4 Mac and it worked flawlessly.

Oh, and if you’re looking to try out those software packages I posted about earlier today, open Installer App, and install “Community Sources”.

AppTapp is a Universal Binary, in Beta, and free.

Update: Readers ask: “Will this mess up my firmware updates?” Answer: Possibly–I’ll try to get a firmer answer out of the developers. Use at your own risk, of course.

From TUAW.

First native iPhone IM app: Apollo IM in beta

Big news today on the iPhone software development front. This morning brings the release of both a native instant messaging client and a native IRC client.

Apollo IM just entered Version Negative 1, an early beta release. It is available as well via Installer.app. Apollo IM has been developed by “Arminius” and offers iPhone-native instant messaging capabilities. Future releases will support file transfer as well as MSN/Yahoo/Jabber/Gtalk support.

“Pogi”’s iRCm provides a GUI-based Internet Relay Chat client for your iPhone. You can join channels, issue raw IRC commands and take part in conversations. iRCm is available for download at Google Code, and packages have been loaded for both Installer.app and PXL.

Both applications have been developed with Shimmer/PXL, the iPhone auto-updates library. Shimmer allows iPhone code to “call home” and update themselves when new versions become available. Both developers are looking for feedback and plan to use this update feature to allow the program to keep growing via its installed base.

If you’re interested in developing for either application, pop over to Google Code and download the latest SVN. Both projects offer a great opportunity to get involved in open source.

iBrickr: Easy iPhone ringtone / app management for Windows

Classically it has been hard for Windows users to modify their iPhones. Mac users get all the cool applications like iFuntastic and such.
ibrickr
No more of that! iBrickr is the Windows application that makes it dead simple to modify your iPhone, add and manage custom iPhone ringtones, and install third-party iPhone applications.

To get a feel for how simple it is, check out this video from Gear Live’s Bleeding Edge:

Current iBrickr version: 0.6 Download

New in 0.5 is custom sound management (make custom lock/unlock sounds, keyboard sound, etc) and file management.

The interface is designed to read like an interactive tutorial - just download the Zip file, extract it somewhere, and run ibrickr.exe (I’ll have an installer soon). Plug in your iPhone and iBrickr will guide you straight through the steps of modifying your iPhone. Once that’s done (takes about 10 minutes), you can manage ringtones and applications to your heart’s content.

If you want to download applications on the go, you can use Nullriver’s Installer (PXL package). Just download the PXL to your computer, then install it from the Applications view in iBrickr.

If you have any issues, hit the Send Error Report link at the bottom-right of the application. The link will bring up a form where you can review the data being sent, and put in an e-mail address that I can reply to. It’s that easy.

iBrickr uses the PXL package format for iPhone applications - check the iBrickr PXL Repository for the latest app releases.

iPhone Unofficial eBook Reader

Many has found out that why Apple haven’t included some kind of an ebook reader to the device. The fact that the iPhone has a large 3.5 inches screen and is good enough for anyone to read on its beloved handset while traveling or commuting in case they are in public transportations.

Ebook Reader on iPhone

Now we have the unofficial iPhone reader, but at this time it can only read HTML and text files stored in the “media/ebooks” folder but it is smart enough to recognize subfolders in case a book is broken down by chapters.

Books.app is a native eBook reader developed for the iPhone. As it’s not an authorised third party application, it’s not simple to install, according to MacNN . Users must first “jailbreak” (or open up) their iPhone’s file system and then install the software.

Books.app requires users to transfer eBooks via the iPHUC (iPhoneUtilityClient) tool used by iPhone modders to get new apps on to the iPhone. iPhone users keen to give it a try should see iPhone Dev Wiki for instructions.

iPhone voice recorder is available now

f you did not find the iPhone voice recorder which Steve Jobs had promised when he announced the iPhone in his Keynote address in January, don’t worry as Erica Sadun from Tuaw has just developed the latest iPhone hack, the iPhone voice recorder.Even though the iPhone voice recording utility is a little more than a proof of concept it works and lets you record audio on the iPhone.

The iPhone hackergot the idea of developing the iPhone Voice recorder utility after seeing a lot of interesting calls in the Celestial framework, specifically the AVRecorder class.

The voice recorder saves files in adaptive multi-rate format (.amr files), a format that can be played in Quicktime.

Agreed, the iPhone voice recorder utility might not have all the necessary features one would look for, but isn’t it better than not having it, at least the basic functionality works. In fact Eric has already launched an improved version with an app wrapper after the initial release.

Well done Erica!

The iPhone software can be downloaded from here (app version & command-line version), so do let me know how good your voice sounds on the iPhone.

iphone voice recorder iphone voice recorder

Update:-

Notes from Erica on how to install the utility:

Once the file is downloaded (download links above) it needs to be run from the iPhone. If you download the app version, install it into /Applications. If you download the command-line version just stick it into /usr/local/bin or wherever.

At this time, to load applications, you really need to be able to use Unix. First, you jailbreak your phone, which is a command-line utility. Next you run the ssh installer shell. Then you start sftp’ing over files and making them executable. If this all sounds like something you’ll be comfortable doing, check out http://iphone.natetrue.com/ and http://iphone.port21.com/Code/iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip

Pretty much all the tools you need are in the http://iphone.port21.com/Code/iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip bundle.

If this all sounds to geeky I would suggest you wait for a step by step guide or a GUI based tool which will help you accomplish all of this.

iPhone has Microsoft Word and Excel Support

Here’s a never-before-seen section of the iPhone : the settings. Which makes sense, because what kind of lame commercial will say “wow, look at all the cool settings the iPhone has!”Here’s what else is new:

• Confirmed in-line viewer for PDFs, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel docs in email. Microsoft complained about lack of support before.w This is a huge deal, even if it is read-only.
• Turning off the phone requires you to slide your finger across the top (like unlocking it) to confirm.
• You can rewind voicemail like a sound file.
• You can finger-scroll through contacts using the alphabet on the right.
• The special iPhone headphones have volume and call control.
• IMAP/POP support confirmed
• Typing with two thumbs actually looks manageable
• Limited amount of ringtones can be selected from the settings menu. Doesn’t look like songs can be used.
• Confirmed turn by turn directions and up-to-date traffic info for Google maps.
