In a recent speech at the eComm conference, Google group manager Rich Miner offered both praise and disdain for Apple’s iPhone handset. The executive stated that “Apple did a number of things right first time, first device,” but that the lack of a background environment for applications has proven to be a major limitation.
Miner also cited that interpreted languages and multiprocessing apps are not supported, summarizing that “there’s a lot of restrictions.”
Last November, Google introduced the Open Handset Alliance - a conglomeration of developers, hardware manufacturers and wireless providers, the group having been nicknamed “Android”. This group currently provides an open source software developer’s kit which is available from Google itself.
