ONTARIO, CA — audioengine announced two new products at this week’s Podcast and New Media Expo, the ASUB-8 subwoofer and a new version of the company’s A5 speakers (rated 5 stars at iPodObserver.com) . Brett Bargenquast, US Sales Manager, took a moment to tell us about some additions to their already impressive product line.

ASUB-8

The first product is the ASUB-8, a subwoofer featuring a downfiring non-directional 8″ front-ported design. It provides excellent bass response in a 11.5″ square cabinet. It can work with the A5 or any other audio system. The retail price for the ASUB-8 will be US $399, and is available in black or white.

A5 Bamboo

The second product is the A5 Bamboo, which has the same electronics as the other A5 speakers, but the cabinet is made from solid dark bamboo. Pricing and availability on the A5 Bamboo will be available soon.

If you’re looking for the last generation model, the Apple Store still has the factory-refurbished Apple iPod nano 2GB MP3 Player in Silver, model no. MA477LL/A, on sale for $99 with free shipping. That’s $10 off and the lowest total price we’ve seen for this model. Sales tax is added where applicable. It carries a 1-year Apple warranty, the same as new iPods. Items are removed from Apple’s web site once they’re sold out. Other last-generation refurbished iPod nanos are available at The Apple Store, also shipped free:

AppleInsider reports today that Apple has plans to reinvent the personal computer (PDA), with a possible announcement of the future product being as soon as January 2008 with a shipping date of mid-2008.

Steve Jobas has mentioned in the past that Apple had been working on a PDA device and rumours go way back to 2003 regarding a possible “Apple Tablet” device.

The rumour site claims that Apple has a PDA device that operates using the same multi-touch OS X base that the iPhone uses. The device is said to be around 1.5x times the size of an iPhone and feature a high-resolution (720×480) screen which consumes almost the entire surface.

Apple originally invented the PDA market in 1993 with the Apple Newton.

Yesterday, Erica posted in her state of the iPod touch jailbreak that a hacker named “Martyn” had obtained a broken iPod touch, and was planning to dive in and download every bit of code on it in the increasingly complicated effort to put 3rd party applications on the iPod touch. He didn’t plan to release the code to the public, but he did plan to upload the code to a secured area of his site in order to let the other touch hackers have a crack at it.

But even before his upload finished, we’re told, his ISP showed up, with a takedown notice in hand. Apple had somehow found his site, had contacted his ISP, and let them know that it would be against copyright law for him to upload that code to the Internet. Martyn isn’t interested in breaking the law (and it would be illegal to share that code), so he pulled the page off. But what’s amazing here is how fast Apple moved on this– either they’ve got someone listening in on the development wiki, or they’re taking cues
from us on how things are going over there (hi, Apple!).

Despite what we’ve heard before, clearly they are very, very interested in making sure the iPod touch doesn’t get hacked. Martyn tells me, as has Erica, that Apple has clearly gone out of their way to keep hackers out of their latest iPod. We’re also told that progress continues despite all that, but Apple is apparently bending over backwards to do everything they can to keep the iPod touch closed.

If I had read Apple’s features guide on the iPod Touch, which, by the way, goes on for 85 pages, I wouldn’t be so hasty to recommend to friends outside the U.S. to wait for iPhone and resist, hard as it is, iPod Touch. Anyway, you get the same

PMP features (essentially) with something extra we call wireless telephony for the same price or thereabouts. After skimming reading through the Touch’s 85-page manual, I have totally turned a one-eighty and professed my faith, or, at least, my fancy, to the one and only Jesus-device… the iPod Touch. For starters, the iPod Touch is gifted not just with a virtual QWERTY keyboard but also with QWERTZ, AZERTY, QZERTY as well as Japanese IME. Two of the virtual keyboards can also appear simultaneously, if that seems useful for you. There is a special icon to quickly switch between keyboards. Double-tapping makes a period when you type, a much needed refinement for grammarians and the text-unsavvy. Sure, iPhone will soon see such improvements, but for the time-being these features are native to the iPod Touch.

iFixit has told Gizmodo that it is possible that the Bluetooth chip has been hidden somewhere in the internals of the iPod touch: “We’re looking into it. It’s hard to say because they can disguise bluetooth antenna on the PCB and the chip could be integrated into something else. I’ll see what I can dig up.”

Apparently Gizmodo (and most other people) assumed that iFixits lack of report on Bluetooth implied that there was no Bluetooth, however it seems they were mistaken. “We’re talking more to iFixit on the matter. There was a faulty consensus that their lack of report on Bluetooth implied that there was no Bluetooth. That was our mistake.”

According to Engadget, Broadcom, Marvell, and CSR all offer single-chip solutions with combined WiFi and Bluetooth radios, and they have heard from a decent source that the internals of the iPod touch are very similar to that of the iphone and that there is a Bluetooth chip in there — it’s just not activated.
